Staging Your Home For The Holidays

Let’s face it, selling your home during the holidays is not ideal, and keeping your home show-ready over this season can be challenging.

Staging your home is all about highlighting it’s best features and creating a space that homebuyers can imagine themselves living in, so going over-board with the decorations may not be the best idea. But does that mean you have to make like the Kranks and skip it all together? Definitely not.

Even though our homes are generally more appealing in the summer and autumn months, there is nothing quite like a warm, inviting home during the holidays, and with a few tips you can find that perfect amount of festive that will have buyers wanting to spend their next holiday in your home.

The Colours

If you and your designer have worked on putting together a stunning palette in your home, the last thing you want to do is take attention away from it. You might want to avoid the classic greens and reds and heavy tinsel. Instead, pick a palette that compliments the current design and decor details of your home. If you’re worried about clashing colours, try a natural theme with wood tones, whites and some greenery! A simple wreath, some pinecones and a few pops of white can go a long way! Or if you want to bring some colour to an already neutral space, try hues of berry with gold accents.

Mind Your Space

One of the most important things in staging is space. We work with what you have (or don’t have) to create balance and flow in your home so it can appear as spacious as possible. So when you’re prepping your home for the holidays, make sure that your decorations do not impede pathways or take up too much floor space. You don’t want to make potential buyers feel boxed in by your decorations!

This is really important to remember when it comes to your tree too. A tree can make a room look a lot smaller than it is, so place it strategically. If you’re really struggling with space, try getting creative with an untraditional tree

Hygge for the Holidays

This Danish concept is trending in North American interior design, and the holidays are the perfect time to bring some hygge to your home. Hygge loosely translates to the ‘cosiness’ of a space or room. Try bringing some attention to your fireplace, get creative with warm holiday lights or invite buyers in with subtle scents of pine and cinnamon! But remember one of the most important rules in hygge - less is more!

Keep It Neutral

In home staging we often if not always try to remove personal items from your home to help potential buyers better envision themselves living there - so it’s probably best to keep the nativity scenes and angels in storage with your family photos during showings. Keeping your home neutral will help all kinds of buyers feel right at home.

The Lights

There is nothing more inviting than a beautifully lit home on a snowy December evening- but you don’t want to scare buyers away with a blow-up Santa and colourful flashing lights. I’m always reminding clients of the power of curb-appeal, and holiday lights can be a great tool to bring out the best in your property! Invite buyers in with a simple string of warm-white lights along the frame of your house, around your wrap-around front porch, or up the ever-greens lining your driveway.

Don’t let showing and selling your house get in the way of your holiday cheer! Just keep these tips in mind and you’re sure to have buyers feeling like they’re home for the holidays!
