How to Pick the Perfect Paint Colour

and 5 Timeless Neutrals

At some point or another, we’ve all found ourselves standing in front of the paint swatch wall wondering how the heck we are going to pick ONE colour.

Choosing the perfect paint colour for a space can be a very daunting task, and is often one of the hardest decisions to make when designing a space. I always recommend a colour consultation before making any big decisions - but to save you a little bit of stress - and hopefully money too- I’m sharing some tips that will help you feel confident in your colour!

Finishes and Furnishings

This one is a little obvious - but always always always consider the existing finishes and furnishings in a room before committing to a paint colour. There is nothing worse than putting time and money into painting a room only to realize it does not work with your current finishes and decor - so keep flooring, tiling, cabinetry, counter-tops, furniture, fabrics, art and area rugs in mind!

Sheen

Another thing to consider when choosing a paint colour is the finish. The finish of your paint can have a dramatic effect on the colour itself and the overall look of a space. Paint with a higher sheen like high-gloss, semi-gloss and satin are also generally more durable than eggshell and flat/matte, but tend to highlight imperfections!

Lighting

Lighting is definitely a factor you’ll want to keep in mind when deciding on a paint colour and finish. The lighting in a space can change the way a colour look on your walls, and how it works with your finishes and furnishings. Your colour of choice may wow you when it’s washed in natural light, but you may not love it as much in dim lighting- so make sure to consider how the colour will look in all types of lighting before you commit to it!

Accent Colours

Undertones, sheen, and lighting can all change the way a colour works with other colours and textures. Just because two or three colours generally “go together”, doesn’t mean that they’ll work well together in your space. Keep this in mind if you're choosing your paint based on accent colours.

Mood

Believe it or not, colour can play a huge role in the mood of a room. Consider the type of room you’re painting and the feeling you want it to convey before settling on a colour.

I’m all for making a bold statement with paint, but sticking to neutrals can be a life saver! Neutrals will give you more freedom if you ever decide to switch up your colour scheme or purchase new furniture, and they are much more appealing to homebuyers.

These are my go to timeless neutrals!

Benjamin Moore Classic Gray OC-23

This very light grey (almost off-white) colour can be a soft, low contrast option when paired with white trim!

Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray 7029

The name speaks for its self with this lovely warm grey - it can be easily paired with existing finishes!

Benjamin Moore Pale Oak OC-20

A warm colour that falls into the greige (beige/grey) family.

Sherwin Williams Pure White 7005

This classic white is one of my favourites! It works with both warm and cool colours and is a great pick for doors and trims.

Benjamin Moore Gray Owl OC-52

This beautiful cool grey with a blue undertone is bright and highly light reflective!

Happy painting,

Kristina!
