How to Pick the Perfect Piece of Wall Art
Whether you are looking to finish off a space with wall hangings, photographs or artwork, choosing the perfect piece doesn’t alway come easily to everyone. Wall art is an excellent way to bring a room together and make a statement!
There are so many things to consider when trying to pick the perfect piece of wall art, and as we all know, art is extremely subjective and personal - so at the very least make sure that you choose something you absolutely love.

Size and Shape
The number one thing to keep in mind when choosing wall art is size. The size of the piece in relation to the wall it’s going on, or the furniture around is very important to consider. Wall art that is not sized correctly can take away from the overall balance and design of your space. You will also want to take into consideration the height of your ceilings and the space between wall art and furnishes!
A piece of wall art doesn’t always have to be rectangular either! This can be a great way to keep patterns and shapes consistent throughout your space as well! For example, try incorporating round and oval pieces!

Oversized and large pieces- over 3 feet in length- are best used as a focal point of a room. Wall art this size is usually best placed over sofas, beds, fireplaces, or on large walls.

Medium sized pieces of wall art - around 20 to 30 inches - can also work well in these areas! If a medium sized piece looks too small for a space - try pairing it with another one of the exact same size.

Small and mini pieces -under 20 inches - work best on small walls, above shelving and in groups of three or more!
Theme and Style
One of the best- and easiest- ways to pick a piece of wall art is by theme and style. You can’t go wrong with a piece that matches the theme and style of your current space and finishes. A piece of wall art that clashes with your current style can be an eye sore and take away from other furnishes in your room. For example, an oversized bright and bold modern abstract may not look so great in a room that has antique elements.

Colour and Texture
A more obvious approach to to choosing a piece of art is based on colour. Keeping your colour scheme consistent- even in wall art- will ensure your room is cohesive and appealing to the eye!
- Choose a piece that has colours already present in your space.
- Choose a piece that uses lighter and darker shades of colours already in your space - this will ensure the piece still complements your current colour scheme but doesn’t look exactly the same.
- Avoid introducing new colours all together.
- Avoid bright colours such as neons on neutral wall colours
- Choose a piece with the same colour or shade of your wall colour.

Another thing to keep in mind is texture! The material a piece is made from can alter the feel of the it from more formal to casual. A woven tapestry will have a more casual feel where as a bronze framed vintage mirror may seem more formal! Sticking to similar textures throughout your room will also help keep it cohesive!

Inspiration
Wall art can be the perfect finishing touch to your newly designed and decorated space, BUT it can also be the perfect inspiration piece too! A piece of art that you absolutely love can easily be used to inspire the rest of the space around it.
A statement piece can be used to inspire a colour scheme or theme for your space. For example, pick two or three colours from your art piece to incorporate into the furnishes. Try matching some throw pillows on your sofa to a less significant colour in the piece or art hanging above it!
I hope these tips have you hanging the perfect piece in your home!

Kristina!
