2020 Design Trends
With a new year-and a new decade- just around the corner, the design world is buzzing with some exciting trends!
I’ve put together a list to help you revamp your space with new and unique styles. Whether you’re planning on a total renovation, or just looking to freshen your space up with a few new decor details, following this guide will help keep your interior design decisions with the times.
Natural Elements
I am excited to report that the new year will welcome natural elements with open arms! I adore adding natural elements to clients’ homes, and my own. Greenery is a great way to bring the outdoors in. Whether they are real or faux, house plants can breathe life into any space. Wicker and wood are some of my go-to organic elements for adding texture and depth. Another not-so obvious way to create an earthy feel is through pottery. Try incorporating ceramic plates, vases, bowls, or planters for the perfect final touch to a natural room.
Warm Neutral Colours
Going into the new year, you’ll want to try moving away from cool grey tones, and more towards warm and creamy whites. Now is the perfect time for a fresh coat of neutral paint. If you’re having commitment issues, you can always take baby-steps by simply incorporating warm neutrals in your furnishes. Start with rugs, throw pillows and wall art, then work your up to larger pieces like sofas and cabinetry.
Concrete and Texture Countertops
Your countertops are an easily overlooked feature in your home that can be customized to complement your space. Entering the new year, look to concrete and textured countertops to add character and depth to your kitchen and bathrooms. For example, marble with more veining can add an elegant and organic finish to your kitchen or bathrooms. For a more bold, industrial look, try textured concrete countertops.
Vintage Decor
Old is new this year! Vintage items add interest to your home and create a timeless feature that catches the eye. Search for rugs and art that tastefully showcase their age. Vintage items can also make your space feel like it has been curated over time. But you’ll want to make sure to keep the balance between your modern and vintage furnishes.
Mixing Metals
While it’s safe to stick to one metal for plumbing fixtures, hardware and lighting, this is the year to mix and layer metals in other decor details throughout your home. A variety of metals is a great way to add a unique and memorable design element to your space. I always recommend playing with texture in a space - the same goes for metal finishes.

Bold Black
Many of the incoming trends suggest that bold is better, which you can incorporate by bringing black into your space. Black decor pieces and furnishes are great for making a statement in an otherwise neutral room, and can act as a resting place for the eye in a room with other bold colours and busy patterns. If you’re feeling adventurous, black wall paint, shiplap, and paneling can add a dramatic flare and make other accents pop.
Open Shelving
Create the illusion of more space to your room with open shelving. Open shelving can give you additional storage and keep your home organized! Bold Wallpaper
When it comes to decorating your walls, show a little flare with a bold wallpaper. Pick a paper that complements your existing space’s accessories and adds depth to the room. Bold wallpaper makes for truly custom wall art within your home and can unify the space. Don’t worry about it not being a selling feature, bold wallpaper is not just making a comeback, it’s here to stay!
