How to Choose the Perfect Throw Pillow

When it comes to designing and staging, there are so many ways to pull all of the elements of a space together - but one of my favourites has to be throw pillows.

Accessorizing with decorative pillows are one of the most effective, and inexpensive ways to improve the overall look of a space. They are the perfect finishing touch, and can be easily used to tie together furniture, area rugs, wall colour and art. Clients are always amazed with the difference a few throw pillows can make!

But with so many beautiful and affordable throw pillows out there, choosing the perfect ones can be tricky - that’s why I’ve put together this guide!

Colour

Just as you would with other elements of a space, you want to make sure your pillows are consistent with the colour scheme of the room. Avoid introducing new colours, and focus on choosing pillows that have lighter or darker shades of colours already in your space. If you are going with a solid colour, you will also want to avoid pillows that are the exact same colour as your couch, chair or bedding.

Pattern

Whether it’s bold geometrics, subtle florals or simple stripes, incorporating patterns is the perfect way to spice up your space! When choosing a pattern, it’s important to make sure it’s scale and colour work well together. A large geometric print might work with some colours, while a small floral print works with others. To keep the room cohesive and polished, choose prints that complement patterns already present in rugs, wall art and other accent pieces.

Keep in mind that too many patterns can be distracting - so try to stick to one simple print and one busy print.

Texture

A quick and easy way to add some texture to your space is with a few throw pillows! Rather than a basic cotton or polyester pillow, try exploring other fabric options -

ideally combining them for more depth. But always make sure to consider how they work with the rest of your upholstery!

Burlap: for a natural or rustic feel.
Leather or Suede: smooth and classic.
Velvet: timeless and the perfect touch of luxury.
Silk or Satin: chic and classy!
Embellished: eye-catching - but make sure it’s comfortable!

Size

As with all elements of a space, you want to make sure the size of your pillows are proportioned to the furniture items they are on. Oversized pillows on small chair, or undersized pillows on a large bed or sofa, can look clumsy. I usually stick to two large and two small - keeping the largest pillows on the outside corers and the smaller ones as you move inwards!

Whether it’s for a bedroom or living room, I hope this guide helps you find the perfect set of throw pillows. But as with all aspects of interior design - even your throw pillows should represent your personal style, so don’t be afraid to break some rules. And don’t worry about making mistakes - throw pillows can easily be switched out if you change your mind!

Love,

Kristina
