5 Furniture Arrangement Mistakes

Furniture arrangement might seem like the least of your worries when it comes to designing a room- but it can make or break space!

Furniture arrangement mistakes are so common and easy to miss. Whether you’ve chosen the wrong scale or you have too much furniture - how you arrange it all can make a word of a difference in the look and feel of a space. If you’ve chosen the perfect colour scheme and furnishes, but something still feels off - it’s likely that you just need to shuffle things around!

Too Much Furniture

You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again - less is more! Too much furniture can make a space feel cluttered and take the attention away from other features in your space. An easy way to avoid this is to make sure every piece has purpose. Try minimizing small pieces like foot stools and baskets to open up floor space. You can also keep your room flowing by ensuring there is ample space between your pieces, allowing any traffic to move comfortably.

Matching Furniture Sets

One of the most common furniture mistakes I see in living rooms, dining rooms and even bedrooms is the use of matching furniture sets. While it might seem like an easy solution - matching sets can result in a dull or repetitive look. Instead of using “matching” furnishes, create a more curated look by adding different, but complementing pieces. For example, rather than a matching patterned chair and love seat - try a solid love seat with throw pillows to complement the texture and pattern of the chair.

Obstacles In Traffic Flow

Blocking highly used areas can disrupt the flow of a room! Furniture placement has to be conducive to how the room is used, and entry and exit points should always be considered. Keep your foyers, doorways, and any other area that might be high in traffic free of furnishes and decor items to ensure your home is as functional as it is stylish!

Furniture Always Against Walls

Keeping your furniture against walls often leads to too much space in centre of room, resulting in an awkward and disconnected space - for example, keeping your coffee table too far away from a sofa will make it difficult to use. Pushing your pieces slightly away from walls and windows will allow for a much more cohesive, and intimate look and feel.

Wrong Furniture Scale

Furniture scale is so important when it comes to designing or staging a space. A sofa that is too large, or an area rug that that is too small can make a space feel awkward - so always scale your furniture to the size of your room. Choosing the right scale of furniture will ensure your space is balanced, resulting in a beautiful and successful design.

Colour and style can be subjective - but using scale, proportion and balance are key for a great design!

Happy designing!
