From A House To A Home
How to Personalize Your Home Décor
Your home is the most personal space there is. As a sanctuary for relaxation, entertaining loved ones - or just about anything else you enjoy - your home should be a reflection of you.
But finding the balance between good design, and personal touches can be tricky. Luckily for you, we are sharing our advice for how you can achieve a look that follows design rules, without sacrificing what you love.
Where To Begin
The easiest way to incorporate personality into any space is by focusing on the smaller touches. We recommend starting with the most personal spaces in your home - like bedrooms or even bathrooms. These spaces can be easier to work with when incorporating personal decor items.
When you begin, always remember to maintain simple design rules - keep the following in mind:
- When in doubt, seek symmetry.
- Keep in mind the rule of thirds - group smaller decor items by three.
- When grouping décor items, be sure to layer items of different heights. Varying heights create depth!
- Get the lighting right. Optimal lighting will ensure all of your décor elements get the attention they deserve.
Here’s How..

01 Personal Collections | Putting your personal collections on display in your home is a great way to showcase your unique interests and hobbies. Collections of items can easily make a space look cluttered, so be sure to organize your collection a way that is pleasing to the eye.
• Try adding an open concept shelving unit to style your ceramics or glassware collection.
• Instead of wall art, opt to frame collections of vintage maps, vinyl’s or comic books and hang them in empty wall space or layer them on shelving units.

02 Warm Welcomes | Personalized welcome mats or signs for your front door, foyer, or common living areas are one of the easiest ways to make the experience of coming home a warm and welcoming one.
Go with a simple family name or choose a message that speaks to your unique culture and beliefs. Check out these gorgeous personalized signs by The Cozy Cabin.
03 Favourite Scents | Sight is by far the most important sense when it comes to design, but we must not forget that good design is an experience that should engage all senses. Give your home a signature scent by incorporating your favourite scented candles, essential oil diffusers, fresh flowers or simply baking a batch of cookies every now and then. Always remember less is more! Strong scents can quickly become overwhelming and take away from enjoyment of your home.

04 Sentimental Wall Art | Family photo galleries, framed recipes, maps - the list goes on! Instead of picking up generic wall art from your local Homesense - get creative with sentimental items that can be framed and/or hung on your walls. Just be sure to be mindful of the following:
• Colour & Texture | Does it complement your current colour scheme and other textures is in the space?
• Size & Shape | Is it an appropriate size for the space you’re considering?

05 Monogram Décor | Tasteful monogram decor is another easy way to add a personal touch to your home. Monograms tend to get an undeserved reputation - but when done right, they can be a beautiful addition to existing decor elements. We hope these ideas spark the inspiration that will help you turn your house into a home! Happy decorating!
